What is Assisted Living?
Assisted Living is long-term care that provides limited day-to-day assistance for generally active seniors wanting to maintain some independence. This is perfect for seniors who still want to have their own space but need support with daily activities. Assisted Living allows for personalized assistance that fits the resident's needs while empowering them to stay as independent as possible.
Assisted Living fits the needs of seniors who:
Need occasional professional medical assistance
Need help with specific, minimal daily tasks
Don't need the scope of care provided in a nursing home, but can't safely live independently
Need access to care but want to maintain their independence and privacy for as long as possible
Want to (and can) be active members of the community
Assisted living requirements
While requirements for Assisted Living vary from community to community, there are some common requirements:
Community admissions forms - this is a resident agreement outlining the services to be provided and the required fees.
Medical history and physical assessment - should be completed by the future resident's physician a month or less before the start date for services.
Care plan - should explain what, when, and how services will be provided, as well as who will administer them. Generally, care plans are updated at least every six months to account for resident needs and ensure they fit resident preferences and comfort levels.
Assisted Living is a wonderful long-term care option for many seniors, but not for all. Before you take the next step, make sure to speak with your loved one to understand their needs better and reach out to communities you are considering to learn more details on their specific requirements and how they fit your loved one.
